(6) EXIT TRIANGLE END SIGNS

Exit Triangle End Marker

Exit triangle end signs are placed in a triangular location between the mainline roadway and the exit ramp to indicate the direction of travel for the exit ramp. The message conveyed by the triangular end sign is “ EXIT or EXIT x x ”, as well as an upwardly sloping arrow pattern, with the arrow pointing to coincide with the direction and angle of departure from the exit ramp. It is important that the use of the triangular end sign be standardized and uniform for all interchange exits, so that the treatment of the triangular end sign is the same regardless of whether the interchange has a single exit or multiple exits in the same direction. In addition, if the traffic conditions of the exit ramp are relatively poor and special emphasis needs to be placed on the speed limit of the exit ramp, an auxiliary speed limit sign in black letters on a yellow background can be attached to the lower edge of the triangular-end sign, but this auxiliary speed limit sign cannot completely replace the function of the statutory speed limit warning sign.

(7) Location Distance Signs

Location Distance Marker

Location Distance Signs are generally installed on the road section after the acceleration lane of the interchange inlet. The content of the signage surface consists of 2 rows or 3 rows, conveying information including important destinations that can be reached in front of you and the distance apart, and is arranged in accordance with the order of proximity from top to bottom. In terms of signage information selection, row 1 selects the name of the important community connected to the exit of the lower interchange, or if not available, the name of the road connected to the interchange or the road number; row 2 selects the important community or other traffic generating source that the mainline road passes through or connects to, and among the location distance signs set up along the route, row 2 tries to select the destination information as different as possible in order to be able to convey the maximum amount of information to the road users. The 3rd row selects important city names that are more influential in the country and one of the dominant directions of the roadway. It is important to note that the distance quantities shown on the location distance signs are generally in miles, and that these distance quantities refer to the actual distance from the sign point to the destination, not just the distance to the highway or expressway exit.

(8) Example of Coordinated Setting of Interchange Wayfinding Signs

Here is an example of a cloverleaf shaped interchange to introduce the coordinated setting of the above types of wayfinding signs. The cloverleaf shaped interchange has 2 exits in each direction, so the exit numbering needs to be added with the suffix A or B. The exit numbering should be set in the same way as the exit numbering, so the exit numbering should be set in the same way. In front of the exit of the interchange, there are mainly three types of signs: exit warning signs, exit indication signs and exit triangle end signs. Exit warning signs are placed 2km and 1km before the exit, and the information on the signage includes two location names, each of which corresponds to an exit, and the location name corresponding to the first exit is arranged in the upper row. An overhead sign is set at an appropriate location in front of the triangular end of the first exit and the 2 signs are mounted side by side on the same bracket, with an exit indicator sign with an upward sloping arrow on the right and a 2nd exit preview sign with “- MILE” at the bottom on the left. Similarly, an overhead exit indicator sign is provided in front of the 2nd exit, or the exit indicator sign may be attached and mounted to the structure if the interchange is a mainline underpass and the exit ramp is provided after the upper span structure. In addition, triangular end signs with exit numbers and upward sloping arrows on the face of the sign are required to be located in a triangular area between each exit ramp and the mainline.

Interchange wayfinding sign

After the inlet of the interchange is mainly set up route number combination sign. Location distance signs and speed limit signs, the first sign set up in the interchange import acceleration lane after the end of 150m, and then every 300m can be set up a sign. Generally the first set of route number combination sign, so that just enter the main line of the driver to confirm the road number and driving direction, followed by the setting of the location distance sign and speed limit sign, so that the driver knows the destination and the distance that can be reached in front of the driver, as well as the safe driving speed of the road. If the spatial distance between interchanges is too small to allow the simultaneous setting of the above three types of signs after the interchanges, especially with the overlap of the warning signs of the exits ahead, one or more signs after the interchanges can be omitted, generally the first consideration is to omit the location of the distance sign, followed by the combination of the route number sign.
